Zafiro Zatzin Romero

Zafiro Zatzin Romero was born in Cuernavaca, in Morelos, México. She arrived in Yonkers in 1984 with her family and has been living there for more the 22 years. Her family has been active in the Mexican community in South Yonkers and they introduced the first Mexican folklore performances from Son Huasteco (la bamba, state of Michoacan) Los Inditos (the Indigenous), Las Mañanitas (early mornings –Dec12-4:00am) in Saint Peter’s Church, Saint Mary’s Church in Yonkers, and Manhattan.

Zafiro has done Aztec storytelling workshops at Queens Museum of Art 2006, Yonkers Public Library Grinton I. Will 2005-present, Yonkers Public Library One Larkin Center The Riverfront, the Hudson River Museum 2002-present, Untermyer Park in Yonkers 1999-present, Dana Discovery Center in Central Park 2004, Kensico Dam Valhalla 2005, the Italian Festival Yonkers, the White Plains Annual Hispanic Parade 2001-Present, the Puerto Rican Day Parade in Yonkers 1985-present, Long Island Children’s Museum 2004 a Mexican Wedding, and the Museum of the City of New York 2004.

Zafiro earned her bachelor’s degree from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, PA majoring Computer Technology in Graphic Media Arts and has been freelancing for non-profit organizations, specializing in Caricatures, face painting, and murals (Foto a la Mexicana / Mexican portrait studio) the Center for traditional Music and Dance, the Mano a Mano Organizing Committee 2003-2004, Untermyer Park, Dana Discovery Center in Central Park, Kensico Dam Valhalla.
