Jim Steinhardt Exhibition of Photographs 1947-2006
Jim Steinhardt has been a photographer for over 50 years. He has been published in Life Magazine, and the New York Times, had exhibitions at a number of museums, including the Museum of Modern Art.
Jim Steinhardt's photographs are included in such esteemed public collections as the Museum of Modern Art, Houston, TX, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, NY, the Jewish Museum, New York, NY, and the Museum of the City of New York, New York, NY. In 1955 a number of pieces were initially selected for the "Family of Man" show by Eduard Steichen and Dorthea Lange. To his grave disappointment, the work was curated out of the now famed exhibition in a last minute show change.
Jim taught photography at three area colleges, owned his own gallery, and in 1993 retired to Florida. He has since moved back to the New York area and currently lives in Yonkers with his wife Sylvia. He continues to photograph on an occasional basis.
Jim's vision of his work was similar to that of the Photo League, seeking a pure vision of the social landscape of New York. His work often features off-guard and candid moments, capturing moments in time. Initially classified as "Street Photography" in the 1940's, "Documentary Photography" in the 1950's, 60's, and into the 1970's, Jim Steinhardt's pieces are currently deemed as "Fine Art Photography."
There will be a retrospective of Jim Steinhardt's photographs at the Yonkers Riverfront Public Library from August 2-31. An opening reception will be held today from 2-5 pm.
