Arena Gallery Exhibit June 5-13.

The ARENA gallery was founded by students from the Yonkers International Baccalaureate High School as a forum where a group of intense people can engage in a continuous artistic dialogue between artists, students, parents, educators and whomever else might show interest in such a cause. It is a space that radiates many possibilities and will serve as an arena for these forum, in which people can speak, be heard, and speak again.

Rather than simply attaching an artistic slant to the school, the gallery seeks to poke a hole in the amorphous bubble of the school environment and expose students to the real world, and have the students engage with the world without intermediaries. The goal is to open up a direct channel for voices that must be heard because they have something important to contribute.

The first exhibition, entitled COLLECTIVE STRUGGLE, will feature the following student artists: Daniel Boccato, Julieta Cardenas, Guadalupe Maceda, Nikko Mernaci.

The exhibit will take place at the Yonkers International Baccalaureate High School, 150 Rockland Ave, Yonkers from June 5 through June 13, 2008. A public reception and a gallery talk by the artists will be held on Friday, June 6, from 5-8 p.m.

I am glad to see some sign of ..artistic life and interest in our community. When I was curating for the West Room Gallery at North Broadway (from 1987 to 1995) I attempted to get the young students involved. I hope that this time the desire to be "intense" will not disappear.
