CUNY offers New Degree in Applied Theatre

About the Master of Arts in Applied Theatre Program

Building on the achievements of its partnership with the Creative Arts Team, (a group that has been working on Creative and Applied Theatrical Techniques since 1973) the School of Professional Studies at CUNY (City University of New York) is now offering the M.A. in Applied Theatre.

The M.A. in Applied Theatre, the first of its kind in the United States, is a sequential, ensemble-based program for students interested in the use of theatre to address social and educational issues in a wide range of settings. The program stresses the unity of theory and practice and is linked to the professional applied theatre work of the renowned Creative Arts Team.

Applied theatre is a specialized field that uses theatre as a medium for education and social development. It involves the use of theatre and drama in a wide variety of non-traditional contexts and venues - in teaching, the justice system, healthcare, the political arena, community development, museums, social-service agencies, and business and industry.

Program Goal
The goal of the program is to educate scholar-practitioners to become future leaders in the field of applied theatre. Students explore key theories in the fields of theatre, education, and community development, and acquire the skills and strategies necessary for creating and implementing the work.

Curriculum
The Master of Arts in Applied Theatre is a 36-credit program, which may be taken full-time or part-time. Students admitted to the program will be introduced to the history of the theatre movements and practices from which the field of applied theatre has developed. They will explore key theories in theatre, human development, learning theory, and community development, all of which help to define and support Applied Theatre practices. Students will be taught the skills and strategies necessary for creating and implementing the work, and they will be asked to think critically about the goals of the work in relation to different audiences, needs and community contexts.

Apprenticeship opportunities are offered with CAT's professional outreach programs or appropriate programs elsewhere. All students culminate their studies with a Project Thesis in which they research, create, implement, and document an original applied theatre model.

Faculty
The faculty includes distinguished CUNY faculty members and visiting international leaders in the field of applied theatre, such as Dale Byam, Warwick Dobson, Tony Goode, Gwendolen Hardwick, Michael Rohd, Chris Vine, and Helen White.

For more information, please contact the M.A. in Applied Theatre advisors at 212-652-2820 or email at appliedtheatre@sps.cuny.edu.

Pope's visit inspires artwork

Under the umbrella of the Yonkers Downtown/Waterfront Business Improvement District's program "Evolution Arts", Biagio (Gino) Civale will show fourteen artworks created during the last five years. Jacqueline Bouet, Director of the LOFT (dance + fitness) has assigned one of its spacious exercise rooms, at 92 Main Street, Yonkers, to host the works by Civale, a Yonkers resident.

The first exhibition will take place from 3.00 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday April 20. The public is invited and the exhibit is free of charge. The artist will be on site for any dialogue with the visitors. Among the artworks will be a painting Civale has realized for the occasion of the visit of the Pope to Yonkers. The work "Eglise" is on a panel, and conveys an abstract feeling of religiousness.

Should the Seminary in Yonkers or a Church of Yonkers desire this work, Civale will donate it willingly. Most of the artworks are large compositions, some reaching 112" in length and 55" in height. The technique used is primarily mixed media on canvas. For any question about the artwork email StudioCivale@msn.com or call 914 965 5703. For any question about the event please visit www.yonkersdowntown.com

Yonkers Downtown BID Announces New Art Series

Posted on www.westchester.com

The Yonkers Downtown/Waterfront Business Improvement District has announced a new program that will enable artists to showcase their work at three art shows to be held on Sunday afternoons in downtown Yonkers in April, May and June.

The art exhibit series, entitled Evolution Arts— open to artists throughout Westchester and the region— will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on three Sundays: April 20, May 18 and June 15. The exhibit sites, clustered together on Main Street and the Yonkers Waterfront, will enable visitors to stroll through all of them during the two hours the exhibits are open to the public. They are “The Loft Dance & Fitness” and Metro 92 (both located at 92 Main Street); Hudson Park, the luxury rental apartment complex along the Yonkers waterfront and the Station Plaza office building at 86 Main Street. Admission to the exhibits is open to the public, free of charge.

In addition to celebrating the artists, local restaurants (to be announced) will participate, offering art lovers the opportunity to enjoy special lunch and dinner menus.

The idea for Evolution Arts originated with Jacqueline Bouet, owner of “The Loft Dance & Fitness” and a member of the Board of Directors of the Yonkers Downtown BID; Jef Campion, a local artist and downtown resident and Steve Sansone, Executive Director of the Yonkers Downtown BID. “The Loft Dance & Fitness” has a gallery of art in the lobby featuring Jef’s works as well as other artists and pieces from The Animazing Gallery. “We are looking for a way to promote the gallery portion of the business and the entire downtown area”, said the Loft’s Bouet.

“We want everyone to come to Main Street to visit our beautiful downtown as well as provide our neighbors with a local cultural venue in their new neighborhood,” said Campion.

Mr. Sansone said: “Evolution Arts will be a wonderful spring event that will not only provide visibility for aspiring artists but afternoons of leisurely art viewing for the public, strolling along Main Street and the beautiful Yonkers waterfront. Our goal is to make this an annual event for the benefit of artists, businesses and the public.”

Artists wishing to submit their art to Evolution Arts need to e-mail up to five digital images (640 x 480 pixels) of their work, including information about the medium, size and any display requirements. Artists will be responsible for furnishing easels, wall hangings or pedestals and insurance. They are also required to be present during the exhibit hours. Submissions should be sent to info@yonkersdowntown.comThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it by the April 11th deadline for the first show on April 20th and by May 1st for subsequent shows.

Evolution Arts is one of several new and exciting events that the Yonkers Downtown BID is introducing this year as part of its mission to promote the downtown district which is undergoing revitalization. Earlier in March, it announced the launch of Let’s Dance Downtown!, an evening of dancing at the Roosevelt Ballroom, which took place on Friday, March 28.

The Yonkers Downtown BID also sponsors the highly successful annual Riverfest and outdoor summer Main Street Film Series at Dusk and the Jazz & Blues at Dusk concerts.

The Yonkers Downtown/Waterfront Business Improvement District was created to promote and implement the economic vitality of the District and the City of Yonkers. The Yonkers Downtown BID is also designed to maintain the downtown streets, contribute to public safety, landscape the district, market special events and create promotional opportunities to highlight the area. Additionally, the Yonkers Downtown BID will preserve and encourage the cultural, historic, tourist and civic interest of the District and the City of Yonkers. For more information, visit www.YonkersDowntown.com.
