All are welcome to submit a free listing to the AWAI website. Thanks to the internet, artists and writers as well as others in all media can work on projects together while living on opposite sides of the world or around the corner from eachother enabling cultures and ideas to blend while giving life to new artforms.
The Artists & Writers Alliance Internationale website will also post collaborations that have taken place between artists and writers who have connected as a result of their listings, a forum for AWAI participants and a listing of AWAI events, performances, and exhibits worldwide. AWAI is the clearinghouse that will bring artists, writers and others in the arts together from around the world; it is then up to the participants to contact eachother directly for more detailed information for possible collaborative projects.
The Artists & Writers Alliance Internationale plans to sponsor events as well as workshops and seminars on the art of collaboration; dates and events to be announced in the near future.

Grant Opportunity: NYFADEADLINE: OCTOBER 3, 2007FREE WORKSHOP ON $7,000 CASH GRANTS FOR ARTISTS TO BE HELD BY
NEW YORK FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS (NYFA) AND Garrison Art Center.
New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) will conduct an information seminar on NYFA Artists’ Fellowships at Garrison Art Center (23 Garrison Landing, P.O. Box 4, Garrison, NY) on Thursday, September 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The information seminar will address questions about NYFA’s on-line application process and inform artists about funding opportunities and other areas of career development. The seminar is free, and no reservations are required.
Each year, NYFA offers $7,000 cash grants to up to 150 artists in all disciplines selected via a peer panel process. Since the Fellowships were first established in 1985, NYFA has awarded more than $22 million to over 3,500 New York artists.
Artistic disciplines eligible in 2007 – 2008 include Architecture/Environmental Structures, Choreography, Fiction, Music Composition, Painting, Photography, Playwriting/Screenwriting, and Video. The 2008 – 2009 cycle will offer Computer Arts, Crafts, Film, Nonfiction Literature, Cross-disciplinary/Performative Work, Poetry, Printmaking/Drawing/Artists’ Books, and Sculpture.
To be eligible for a NYFA Fellowship, applicants must be a resident of New York State for at least two years prior to the application deadline and cannot be enrolled in a degree program of any kind. The Artists’ Fellowships application calls for a small sample of work which is reviewed by panels of artists working in the category being reviewed. NYFA will begin accepting on-line submissions at
www.nyfa.org/afp in late-July. Application deadline for the 2007-2008 round of NYFA Artists’ Fellowships is Wednesday, October 3, 2007.

CALL for BICYCLE RACK DESIGNS
REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL Specification No. 4715
With a population of 75,000 of varied social and economic backgrounds, New Rochelle is a modern suburban community with national award winning schools, three colleges - Iona College,
The College of New Rochelle and Monroe College – 37 parks, a burgeoning downtown and a superb transportation system. Now the city is embarking on a Bicycle Friendly program to designate 37 miles of bicycle lanes to encourage the use of this environmentally-friendly transportation alternative. As part of the program, the city is sponsoring a competition for unique, artistically designed bicycle racks to add visual appeal to its vibrant downtown streetscape.
SCOPE OF WORK
This project will emphasize the balance between form and function by creating artistic bicycle rack(s). The bicycle rack(s) must be designed to withstand the elements of a cold-weather
climate as well as normal recreational use. All designs must accommodate a minimum of six (6) bikes, be constructed of durable materials, not expose the City to any claims of liability, and be user-friendly for a wide range of cyclists (child-adult).
SPECIFICATIONS FOR DESIGN
The function of the artistic bicycle rack should be self-evident and easy to use, with the artwork designed in accordance with the following Design Specifications:

ARTWORK SELECTION
On behalf of the City of New Rochelle, the artist selection process is being managed by public arts consultant, JMC Art Partners (Project Manager). The Art Committee, comprised
of public arts experts, urban planners, traffic engineers and other City officials, will review the artwork concepts and proposals submitted. This committee is charged with reviewing the artist applications and selecting a small group of finalists. Finalists will receive a $500 honorarium to
further develop their proposals and submit to the committee final technical designs for the bicycle rack(s). Any weather-resistant, durable, non-abrasive material that can be easily maintained and does not scratch or damage bicycle frames will be considered. It must withstand rain, snow, freezing, and saline conditions, if sited near one of the waterfront locations along the Long Island Sound. Artists should approach the project as a permanent installation to be installed into a concrete surface, with a minimum 10 year life expectancy. All work must be safe to pedestrians and bikers. When bicycles are attached, the work must be no greater than 6 feet wide (the length of most bicycles). The bicycle rack must accommodate at least 6 bicycles. The work should be of an appropriate height and design so that it will not create a hazard for visually impaired or
physically challenged pedestrians.
A bicycle should not have to be lifted off the ground more than 6 inches to access and be secured to the rack. There must be a minimum two-point connection between the bicycle and the rack, i.e. the artwork must allow for the bicycle frame as well as at least one wheel to be secured
to the rack. Most sizes and shapes of bicycle frames and bicycle wheels should be able to use the rack, utilizing generic, commonly available locks and chains utilized by bikers. Aesthetically, designs should either be an iconic work with universal appeal, or be responsive to the location in which it will be sited by visually or conceptually referencing the existing architecture, history, and/or character of a specific neighborhood and its residents.
BUDGET
The selected artist(s) will be required to sign a contract with the City of New Rochelle (City) that defines his/her responsibilities and the schedule of payments from the City to the Artist. The fee
for the final selected artistic bicycle rack(s) is $1,500/design. This fee is for design only, based on the fabrication of one unit, and does not cover fabrication and on-site installation costs.

This collaborative art experience is brought to you by The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Arts, Peekskill, and The Hudson Writers’ Center, Sleepy Hollow, affiliates of the Westchester Arts Council. Mara Mills, stage director, is chairing the project.
In visual art size is determined by the measurements of the canvas; scripts are measured by length of performance. This call for scripts asks playwrights to use the paintings from the HVCCA exhibit Size Matter: XXL as inspiration and backdrop for their 5-10 minute plays.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
SIZE MATTERS: XXL
Featuring 31 artists from 9 different countries, XXL presents work in which large-scale plays an essential role in the success of the painting. These works occupy nearly the entire visual field of the viewer and demand attention. They range from brash and confrontational (Meese) to quiet and elegiac (Khedoori). They include self-portraiture (Pei-Ming), pure abstraction (Kowski), landscape (Kroner), minimalism (Buren), allegory (Rauch), and representation (Henning). The exhibition investigates the range of some of the best painting today
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Interested playwrights are invited to HVCCA, 1701 Main Street, Peekskill, NY 10566, tel: 914.788.0100, on October 13 at 3:00pm to view XXL. Playwrights will choose one of the paintings to use as the inspiration for a 5-10 minute play. Background material on the artists, images, and a walk through of the exhibit, with one of HVCCA’s knowledgeable staff, will be available as well as a chance to commune on your own with the works. A committee will review the submitted plays anonymously and 5-6 plays will be chosen to be performed on Thursday, January 24th and Sunday, January 27th 2008.
GUIDELINES:
1. Plays must be 5-10 minutes in size.
2. Monologue or dialogue, maximum 3 actors.
3. DEADLINE: 11/15/07
4. Scripts may address the creative process, the artist’s process, or the viewer’s process or may be inspired by the image in the paintings or the emotions they evoke.
5. The paintings will be the backdrop (set) for the play and must be relevant to the script.
6. Playwrights will not be asked to direct or act in their own pieces.
7. Submissions should include a cover sheet with play title, your name and contact information. Please put only the title on the play itself.
