YOHGallery

The YOHGallery (standing for Yonkers-on-Hudson) Gallery was a onetime event put on by Yonkers residents (and journalists) Mark Pittman and Laura Fahrenthold. Their hope was to put Yonkers and Getty Square on the map as an emerging art scene by producing a series of art shows featuring 35 artists from the Tri-State area, live performance art, a Brazilian band, beer and wine, and their signature dish (the Yonkers-on-Hudson Corndog). The first (and so far as I can tell, only) YOH show was June 3-5, 2005.

The ambition of the gallery show was to promote public recognition of Yonkers-on-Hudson as a thriving area in which to live, work, create, and raise forward-thinking families. At the time of the opening, the area's renovations were already under way, with the new $56 million library, a $35 million historically renovated train station, new restaurants including the upcoming 4-star, Xaviar's on the pier, as well as other development projects. The 1.5 billion dollar Streuver Fidelco Cappelli plan had not yet been announced.

Nearly 2000 people attended the opening show, and it received some big press, including two NY Times articles, but it has not continued with its promise of producing a series of shows. Were they too soon in trying to start their gallery? Will their gallery (or another like it) rise in the next few years?
