Westchester Arts Council June Opportunities

To: Westchester Artists

From: Anthony Pellegrino, Programs Associate for Cultural Services

Date: June 1, 2008

Re: Artist Opportunities

Good morning artists! This month there is a great selection of Artist Opportunities that I hope you can all take advantage of.

As always, should you have a specific inquiry about any of the below opportunities, please contact the source of the call directly. Remember, more information can be found within this email detailed below, and can also be found on our website along with on-going artist opportunities.

If you have any artist opportunities that you would like to share, please email them to me in a timely matter, so that I can include them.

I'm sure many of you have heard about the Orphan Works Bill but in case you have not - here's a quick explanation. This proposed bill affects all images (professional paintings, designs, even family snapshots) that appear on the internet. In order to retain copyright of your images it is proposed that you have to register every image with privately-held commercial registries. Obviously this is completely impossible & unaffordable. But if you don't register your images, they are available for use by anyone, for any purpose, without your permission or payment to you. This is a complete change to the current situation where you own your copyright, even if it is not registered, just by being the creator of the image.

You can use the link below to find pre-written letters to your Senator & Congressman registering your opposition to the Act. Just enter your zip code and follow the instructions.

http://capwiz.com/illustratorspartnership/home/

Two important points - this doesn't just affect artists. It affects family photos put on the internet to show to your friends, images on facebook etc... So pass this on.

Another point - we know many artists are already wary about putting images of your work on websites. Even if this act passes, this doen't mean you should stop using the internet, it is still a great way to display your work. What it does mean is that you need to display low resolution images which can't be enlarged and printed. Or you need to add an embedded signature in the image so that the image can't be reproduced without the signature. If you would like help with this please contact me and I would be happy to walk you through this. Anthony Pellegrino 914-428-4220 x 225 or apellegrino@westarts.com.

Of course the best option is to defeat this bill. So sign up and pass it on.

Thank you and live with passion in the month of June.

“Everything you'll ever need to know is within you; the secrets of the universe are imprinted on the cells of your body.” Dan Millman
